Team sprint to return in Nordic Combined
The DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup will hold its last stage before a break for the Holidays in Seefeld, Austria this upcoming weekend with a three-day weekend including two individual Gundersen events and a team sprint. The Seefeld World Cup weekend was moved from its traditional mid-January date to mid-December because of the first edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will be carried out from 13th to 22nd January 2012 in Innsbruck and nearby venues, of which the Nordic disciplines as well as Biathlon will take place in Seefeld.
In Seefeld, the team sprint celebrates its comeback at World Cup level, after being absent during the last four seasons. The team sprint is one of the two new competition formats together with the penalty race, that have been introduced onto the program this season.
The premiere penalty race at World Cup level was staged ten days ago in Lillehammer (NOR) and saw Germany's Eric Frenzel as winner. The penalty race received initial good feedback for example from Germany's head coach Hermann Weinbuch who also played a role in inventing the new format. "This was a totally different race from a normal Gundersen-event. We had a team meeting after the jumping portion and discussed our tactics", he said. "We decided to take the lead with strong racers and secure the victory for Eric Frenzel." Frenzel agreed: "I like the new format. Our tactic of a team race worked."
The next penalty race is in program on 29th January 2012 in Zakopane (POL).
