Freestyle & Snowboard Worlds 2017 in Sierra Nevada
The FIS Council unanimously elected Sierra Nevada (SPA) as host of the joint FIS Freestyle Ski & FIS Snowboard World Championships in 2017 during its Meeting at the 48th FIS International Ski Congress. Previously, Sierra Nevada hosted the 2006 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
The Sierra Nevada Ski and Snowboard Resort which is located in the highest part of the Cordillera Penibética mountain range, has a total surface area of 365 Ha. For lift service the resort has 16 chairlifts, 2 cable cars and 3 rope tows, which can move 46,381 persons per hours. Many seasons, Sierra Nevada attracts over 1 million skier visits.
Starting in 2005, Sierra Nevada has hosted FIS Freestyle Ski World Cups and European Cups in ski cross and mogul skiing, while in snowboarding, it has staged snowboard cross and the parallel competitions. At the end of last season, Sierra Nevada staged the 2012 FIS Junior Snowboard World Championships, with a total of just under 300 athletes from 35 nations.
The recognition of 100 years of snow sports in Sierra Nevada, the Royal Spanish Ski Federation along with the Organizers, will stage a combined FIS Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard World Cup Final. It is anticipated that over 900 competitors from 40 nations will participate in 16 competitions from March 19th to 26th 2013.
Eduardo Valenzuela, Mountain Manager of the Sierra Nevada stated, “This is an opportunity to improve and extend our tourism and sport capacity. Given that 51% of our clients are under 30 years of age, means that our resort is fundamentally for young people. We want to create a place where young people can come and experience winter sports. Freestyle skiing and Snowboarding is very attractive to our clients, so this is a natural thing for us to do. We have already made some investments, with the creation of a new terrain park, a new world class mogul slope and half pipe along with upgrading of the snowmaking system and fiber optic infrastructure. Along with our high altitude training center (2320m), these new ski and snowboard developments, the growing strength of these new Olympic events, we are getting fully prepared to stage these important FIS competitions in 2017.”
It is proposed to stage the combined championships during the last week in February and first week in March 2017. The championship competitions will include 23 competitions, 12 in Freestyle Skiing and 11 in Snowboarding. By 2017, these competitions will be the 16th World Championships in Freestyle Skiing and the 12th World Championships in Snowboarding and the second time that the World Championships have been held together. 60% of the events (cross, halfpipe and slopestyle) in both disciplines share the same course layout.
