Cross-Country Continental Cups concluded
The FIS Continental Cup series all over the world are some of the most important Cross-Country competitions. They allow the younger athletes to prepare themselves in several ways for the World Cup level. As a bonus, the Continental Cup winners from the different regions of the world were allowed to compete in the World Cup Final this year. Some of the successful athletes took advantage of this rule change and participated in the World Cup Final in Falun, Sweden. Here is an overview of the COC series.
The OPA Cup season in Europe was a great success. Seven different venues and five countries organized the Alpen Cup series. The winners of this Cup, and therefore holders of a fixed starting place during the first World Cup period next year, are Germany's Monique Siegel and Andy Kuehne. Siegel won the OPA Cup ladies' ranking 57 points ahead of Elodie Pin Bourgeois (FRA). Coraline Hugue captured the third place only four points behind her compatriot Bourgeois. Andy Kuehne took his first overall victory just 34 points ahead of teammate Thomas Bing. Italy's Luca Orlandi seized third place with 584 points.
In the Scandinavian Cup, 5 different venues with a total of 11 competitions comprised the series. The Norwegians dominated the top of the rankings with seven skiers in the men's top 10, and six athletes amongst the top 10 on the ladies' side. Finn Haagen Krogh (NOR) and junior world champion Heidi Weng (NOR) clearly won the overall rankings. Krogh proved that the Scandinavian Cup represents a reservoir of young and talented skiers by scoring third place in the World Cup Final last weekend. The runner-up on the men's Scandinavian Cup standing, 171 points behind Krogh was his teammate Hans Petter Lykkja who captured second place overall for the second consecutive year. Oeyvind Gloeersen (NOR) was third, 264 points behind the winner. On the ladies side, Norwegian Britt Ingunn Nydal (2nd place) and Astrid Oeyre Slind in third place rounded out a purely Norwegian podium.
The US SuperTour just concluded last weekend in Sun Valley with a competition series "tour" like the World Cup Final. The final was dominated by the World Cup Skier Kikkan Randall and Kris Freeman but Lars Flora and Holly Brooks earned the title of the overall SuperTour with impressive performances and will get a personal spot in the first period of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup 2011/2012. Both Brooks and Flora shined on the SuperTour this year, earning several podiums each en route to the top spots.
The next Continental Cups will kick off in July/August with the series in the Southern hemisphere.
