Swiss appointed as Sochi 2014 Sports Chief

Swiss appointed as Sochi 2014 Sports Chief

Swiss ice hockey leader Werner Augsburger has been appointed as the new sports director of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. The 52-year-old will leave his role as CEO of Switzerland's ice hockey league in August and take up the Sochi position in September.

"In his new position, Mr. Augsburger will be in charge of the organization of the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games sports competitions as well as liaising with International Federations and other sports unions," said a Sochi 2014 statement.

Augsburger claimed it was a chance too good to miss. "The confidence placed in me by the Russian Organising Committee is a great honor," he stated and explained further, "as a longtime sports official in various management functions, this offers a unique opportunity. It is probably comparable to a Swiss ice hockey player who gets the chance to play in the National Hockey League NHL."

Formerly one of Switzerland's top volleyball players, Augsburger has held a number of top roles, including working for the Swiss National Olympic Committee and being Switzerland's Chef de Mission at three consecutive Games - the Summer Games in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 and the Winter Games in Turin 2006.
