Alpine Skiing: New season, new faces
The beginning of May also marks the start of the new season - summer preparations are getting under way for most Alpine World Cup teams with a few of them beginning training with new coaches. What follows below is a brief summary of the main changes in the coaching structures of the World Cup teams that have come to the attention of the FIS Newsflash:
In Scandinavia, the major change has been a new cooperation in the speed events between Sweden and Norway. The Swedish and Norwegian men will be training together under the tried and trusted leadership of Havard Tjorhom (Norway) and Marko Pfeifer (Sweden) whilst Åre-native Ulf Emilsson has changed back to Sweden where he takes charge of the speed team after previously coaching the Norwegians whilst continuing to train together with them and also the Canadians in a team SWECANOR. On the tech side, former racer Johan Brolenius will replace the previous Swedish men's slalom coach Magnus Larsson.
On the ladies side, there are also a few changes. While Fredrik Steinwall continues as the Swedish head coach and Rudi Soulard will be in charge of tech training, Stefan Abplanalp, who previously coached one of the Swiss ladies' speed groups, will be leading a combined Norwegian and Swedish ladies speed team. Christian Thoma, who previously served as the head coach for the Finnish ladies team, will work with Stefan. Mikael Junglind has decided to move on after twelve years with the Swedish ladies' team, especially with Anja Pärson whilst Johan Wallner, who was also in the coaching group with Anja Pärson in the past years will return to as coach to the Torsby Ski High School.
In Switzerland, the new ladies‘ head coach is former Swiss men’s speed coach Hans Flatscher. He will oversee the work of two main training groups, speed and tech. The speed group will be led by Daniele Petrini and the new tech group coach will be South Tyrolean Alois Prenn who previously worked for the Swedes for seven seasons. The former Swiss ladies’ tech coach Lionel Finance has moved on to coach the young Russian ladies’ speed team. On the men’s side Osi Inglin remains in charge of the team, where Roland Platzer coaches the speed group, Steve Locher the tech group and Sepp Brunner the combined group.
There were also a few exchanges between the US and Austrian teams. The US men's team has added the Austrians, former men’s downhill coach Andreas Evers and ladies European Cup head coach Bernd Brunner to its coaching staff, together with a former World Cup athlete TJ Lanning. Meanwhile in Austria, succeeding Evers, Burkhard Schaffer is the new coach of the Austrian men’s downhill teamand Thomas Trinker is the new head coach of the European Cup ladies.
The US ladies team has added a multi-discipline program in order to continue to support and improve the high performances of Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso. Jeff Fergus will work directly with Vonn, while Chris Knight will continue to focus on Mancuso. Chip White will continue to lead the ladies speed team as Roland Pfeifer returns for another year at the head of the technical program.
In Canada, Paul Kristofic has moved on after six years as the men’s head coach. Alpine Canada announced that he has been appointed to the new position of vice-president of sports, while Peter Bosinger will succeed him as head coach of the men’s alpine team. On the ladies’ side, Hugues Ansermoz continues to develop the young successful Canadian team.
In Finland, Christian Brüesch is the new head coach for the Finnish ladies team around Tanja Poutiainen. On the men’s side Janez Slivnik continues to lead the men’s team.
Meanwhile, the Germans will continue under the leadership of Thomas Stauffer (ladies) and Charly Waibel (men) as will the French with Jean-Philippe Vuillet (ladies) and Gilles Brenier (men). In Italy, the new President of FISI, Flavio Roda has confirmed the Technical Directors Claudio Ravetto (Alpine men) and Raimund Plancker (Alpine ladies) in their roles for the upcoming season.
