Liberec hosts EYOWF 2011

Liberec hosts EYOWF 2011

The 10th European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 (EYOWF) was officially opened on Saturday, 13th January at the Liberec ice hockey arena. Representatives of 44 countries were present at the official opening to hear the speech of the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge. At 20:45 local time, the president of the Senate of the Czech Republic Milan Stech declared the 10th European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 open.

1511 young and talented athletes aged 15 to 18 have gathered in Liberec (CZE), the host of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009, to compete in five FIS disciplines from 13th-18th February. The disciplines on the program are Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Alpine Skiing and Snowboard, along with Biathlon, Ice Hockey and Figure Skating. "This festival is a great motivation for young European athletes, because it gives sense to their career from the very beginning", said Jacques Rogge.

The Summer and Winter European Youth Olympic Festivals represent the top events for young athletes in this age category and served as a role model for the Youth Olympic Games which have been introduced by the IOC recently. These EYOWF are organized in two-year cycles, always in odd years, at the initiative of the Association of European Olympic Committees (EOC).
