31st Masters World Cup in Sovereign Lake (CAN)

The foundation for the current Cross-Country Masters World Cup was laid in Morin Heights (CAN) in 1980. At that time, 104 participants competed in unofficial world championships in all age categories. Canada is also the only country that has so far carried out these championships five times: 1989 in Quebec City, 1995 in Canmore, 2002 in Quebec City and 2011 in Sovereign Lake, British Columbia.

1125 participants from 21 nations followed the invitation by Silver Star/Sovereign Lake to the 31st Masters World Cup, and were not disappointed. The competitions at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club Center, well-known among the world's top athletes, were carried out in optimal snow (2 metres of powder) and weather conditions. The varied and wide tracks were met with great feedback, despite the high altitude of 1600m which demanded extraordinary form.

The competitions in the twelve age categories included individual races over 5, 10, 15, 30 and 45 km in both Cross-Country techniques along with a relay per category over 4 x 5 km for ladies and men.

Most participants hailed, as expected, from host nation Canada, i.e. 467, followed by the USA with 326 and Russia with 92 starters. In some races, the fight for medals was very intense, sometimes even requiring the help of the photo finish camera. Much respect belongs to the successful athletes collecting multiple medals, up to four golden ones! Equally praiseworthy was the engagement of the 300 volunteers who stood out through their friendliness and hospitality. The Masters World Cup 2012 will take place in in Oberwiesenthal, Germany in early March (www.mwc2012.com), followed by the 2013 edition in Asiago, Italy.
