World leaders of sport gather in London

The leaders of world sport have gathered in London for the ninth edition of the SportAccord Convention. Against a back-drop of preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games, a formidable line-up of speakers from the world of sport, politics and business has been assembled for six action-packed days. The major theme of this year's SportAccord is ‘Why Sport Matters.' The official opening of the convention was carried out by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, followed by update on the preparations for the London 2012 Games by Sebastian Coe, Chair of the LOCOG. The 2011 SportAccord conference is sold-out with 1'500 delegates in attendance.

"We believe we have put together an outstanding line-up of speakers to help address a range of critical issues," said SportAccord Convention Chairman Hein Verbruggen. "The profile of sport in the world has never been higher and that means that its guardians have a special duty to address the issues facing us.

"The SportAccord Convention 2011 will, I believe, set new standards for our annual event. And with just over a year to go before the London Olympics, we are perfectly positioned to get a briefing from the ‘front line.'"

Besides the annual General Assemblies of the Associations of the Winter, Summer and Recognized International Federations and of SportAccord (the Association of International Sports Federations), the IOC Executive Board is also meeting in London. The three cities bidding for the 2018 Winter Games - Annecy, France; Munich; and Pyeonchang, South Korea - will have one of their final opportunities to make presentations to a key international audience on Thursday just three months before the IOC vote set for July in Durban, South Africa.
