Developing speed racers of the future The general goal of the FIS competition structure is to prepare athletes for racing at the highest levels, and downhill ski racing is no exception. The current status and future development of the competitive path from FIS and junior entry-level Alpine speed racing to the World Cup circuit was at the focus of a meeting among some forty representatives of the National Ski Associations, World Cup and European Cup organizing committees from seven nations along with FIS professional staff at the Hotel Hilton Zürich Airport on Wednesday. The organization of speed races, especially men's downhill competitions, has reached unforeseen levels in terms of safety requirements, course preparation and general organization. The cost of a speed racing week at a major resort can be estimated at several hundreds of thousands of Euros at present. At the same time, the importance of downhill racing at levels below the World Cup, including the required downhill training runs, is essential for the development of young racers and the future of World Cup downhill racing. In this first workshop, the participants agreed on the importance of coordination of organizational efforts and the competition calendars, as well as various cooperation initiatives to support the training and development of young speed racers for the upcoming season. Future discussions will outline longer-term strategies to ensure that the development paths for speed racing are optimized. "We are very pleased by the willingness of most key players to attend today's meeting and engage in the discussion with constructive feedback and ideas. We will already see the results of this first meeting about the calendars for next season's European Cup for both men and ladies," said meeting organizer Markus Waldner, Continental Cup Coordinator and FIS Race Director on the men's European Cup tour.
