High honors to Helmut Recknagel, Joe Lamb

A German Ski Jumping legend, 74-year-old Helmut Recknagel has been named to the "Hall of Fame of German Sport". The ceremony took place in Berlin in the presence of German Federal President Christian Wulff. A native of Steinbach-Hallenberg in Thuringen, Recknagel became known as the first Central European winner on Holmenkollen as a 19-year-old in 1957. Many time medalist at title events, Recknagel won Olympic gold in Squaw Valley in 1960 on the large hill. He also won the Four-Hills-Tournament three times. The "Hall of Fame of German Sport" was established five years ago to honor the most impressive German athletes. The selections are made by a jury which received 200 suggestions this year.

Last week the United States Ski and Snowboard Association took the opportunity at its 2011 Congress in Park City to present its 2011 awards. Among the awardees was the longtime FIS Nordic Combined official and Committee member Joe Lamb received the USSA's highest award, the Julius Blegen Award for his three decades of service to the sport. This award is presented to a dedicated USSA volunteer for a lifetime of service to the sport. Lamb, a 1972 Olympian and Lake Placid native, has had a major impact on his discipline of Nordic combined through his vision for building the sport in America and his international leadership.

After a long career in coaching he has been an advocate of youth sport for decades and helped bring Norwegian athletes and coaches to Lake Placid to inspire local athletes, like future Olympic champion Billy Demong. He has been member of the FIS Nordic Combined Committee since 1991, serving for 15 years including a term as vice chairman.
