Action packed summer for Freestyle Skiers
Summer is more than dry land training and skiing on glaciers for skiers. The Summer Grand Prix has been part of the Ski Jumping calendar for years and this summer National Ski Associations and local Organising Committees have taken the chance to enhance the competition options for Freestyle Skiers as well. With several Freestyle Ski competitions in aerials, freeski and slopestyle big air, the Freestyle Skiers will have a great opportunity to prepare for the coming season, and to prove their spot on their respective national teams.
With the inclusion of ski halfpipe into the program for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games and the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck 2012, Freestyle Skiing has the wind in its sails these days. The Austrian Ski Association chose to select their halfpipe team based on summer competitions, respectively through the “6 hills summer grand prix”, which is a Freestyle Ski tournament located in Germany and Austria. Based on the three competitions located in Austria (Rauris, Wien and Förderlach), the athletes will be selected for the national Olympic qualification, which takes place in November at Kuhtai, the same venue which will be used for the Youth Olympic Games.
For the ninth time, the “freestyle night” was held in Mettmenstetten (SUI) on the 16th July. A mixture of aerials, freeski, snowboard and bike events has contributed to the growth and success of this competition in Switzerland with over 50 participating athletes. With separate competitions for the juniors and seniors, the athletes went through a qualification round followed by the main night finals. With jumps over 10 meters, in stunning summer sunshine in the Swiss countryside, the 3000 spectators were able to enjoy yet another exciting freestyle night.
In the Czech Republic, the European Championship in aerials, called the “Freestyle Czech Open”, was held on the 9th of July in the acrobat park. Several of the best World Cup and Europa Cup athletes from last season were on the start list, which attracted thousands of spectators. Another spectator friendly event was held in conjunction with a traditional boat festival in Alesund, Norway. On the harbour in the middle of the city, 40 Freestyle Skiers performed their jumps and tricks in front of enthusiastic crowds. The competition was part of the Norwegian Freestyle Ski Team’s summer training.
