Final Penalty Race pilot in Liberec

Final Penalty Race pilot in Liberec

There are now only five DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup individual competitions left until the season finals in Oslo. The discipline's super Jason Lamy Chappuis (FRA) seems to have it all under control with his defence of the overall title for the second straight year. His present leading margin over Akito Watabe (JPN) now amounts to 238 points and 370 points over Mikko Kokslien (NOR).

This means that the race for the overall could be over for Kokslien after the two upcoming competitions in Liberec (CZE) next weekend. Watabe, too, risks losing the large crystal globe to Lamy-Chappuis prematurely.

The good news is that the fight for the overall title is still on and next weekend features the third pilot of the new format Penalty Race this season. The new modus was developed by the FIS Nordic Combined Committee chaired by FIS Council Member Roman Kumpost (CZE). The first two Penalty Races were won by Eric Frenzel (GER) in Lillehammer (NOR) in December and by Lamy Chappuis in Val di Fiemme (ITA) earlier this month.

In Liberec, the eyes will also be on the home town hero Tomas Slavik who scored a third place in Klingenthal last weekend, and on Austria's Gruber who finished on the podium in each of the last three competitions. These two challengers, along with Wakabe and Kokslien, could well manage to postpone decision in the race for the overall title. The Italian star Alessandro Pittin is out of action following a serious fall in Ski Jumping training in which he sustained a shoulder injury which ended his season prematurely.
