Ladies Ski Jumping: Hendrickson Writes History
"I wanted to follow the path of Lindsey Van, who won the first ladies' Ski Jumping World Championship gold. I have achieved something important like the first individual World Cup victory and now the first overall World Cup title. And I know that this is a historical moment, but I will need months or even years to realize what it really means." These are the words of Sarah Hendrickson. She will be awarded a crystal globe this coming Friday in Oslo, as the first ladies' FIS Ski Jumping overall World Cup winner.
In fact, the historical first World Cup series was decided during the past weekend in Zao, Japan. On Saturday, March 3rd, at 3:15 pm local time (6:15 GMT), history was written. Sarah Hendrickson, a 17-year-old teen from Utah, USA was crowned prematurely as the overall World Cup winner, after the cancellation of the final round of the second competition of the day. With just one event to go at Oslo's Midstubakken, her advantage over Austria's Daniela Iraschko is 335 points.
Up to now, Hendrickson has been very consistent all season, having won eight of the 13 World Cup competitions and finished runner-up three times. The amount of prize money she has won is more than 30.000 SFR. But Hendrickson is no diva, just a grounded champion. "I will save the money for the future, for school and college."
Sarah Hendrickson and 15 year-old local heroine Sara Takanashi left their mark on the three competitions in Zao. Hendrickson won two events, finishing second once; Takanashi took the other first place and two second spots. "They will dominate the scene in the next years", some coaches have said. But the so called "old stars" such as Daniela Iraschko (AUT), twice third, Ulrike Graessler (GER), once third, Anette Sagen (NOR) and Lindsey Van (USA) are not going to go without a battle. "Let's see what will happen in Oslo", Iraschko said. "There, I became world champion in 2011 and the Midstubakken is one of my favourite hills."
