Austrian Ski Jumping season
If one nation dominated this Ski Jumping winter, it was the Austrians. Already at the season opening in Kuusamo (FIN), they won the team and individual competitions. At the start of the season it was Andreas Kofler who wore the yellow jersey of the World Cup leader for the first time in his career. Soon thereafter, Thomas Morgenstern reached top form and started his winning streak in Lillehammer which continued until the last competition before Christmas in Engelberg, that was won by Kofler again. It was clear at this point that the Austrians would be the ones to beat at the Four-Hills-Tournament. In Oberstdorf, Morgenstern won the first of the Four-Hills events as well as again in Innsbruck, which laid the foundation for first victory Tournament. After Wolfgang Loitzl and Andreas Kofler in the two years before, this was the third Austrian victory in a row. Simon Ammann's dream of winning the last big title that the Swiss has not won yet did not come true.
But the Austrian team continued its impressive success and in Harrachov the Ski Flying specialist Martin Koch, who had his best season this winter, finally celebrated his first World Cup victory. After an injury, Gregor Schlierenzauer returned to shape in Ski Flying . The Tyrolean had suffered a knee injury and could not take part in the Four-Hills-Tournament.
Just in time for the World Championships in Oslo, Schlierenzauer again won a World Cup competition. At the world's largest hill in Vikersund, he was unbeatable twice. His main rival was Norwegian Johan Remen Evensen, who set a new world record of 246.5 m there.
At Oslo 2011, all five gold medals went to Austria. Morgenstern and Schlierenzauer put their stamp on the Championships by winning three gold medals each. Both team competitions were won by Austria, while Morgenstern and Schlierenzauer won the individual titles. With Daniela Iraschko also the ladies' competition was won by an Austrian athlete.
To conclude the season, Morgenstern won the overall World Cup and Schlierenzauer the Ski Flying World Cup. So there was not much left for the other teams in the 2010/11 season. "It went great for me right from the beginning", said Morgenstern about his season.
However, the shooting stars of the season did not come from Austria which raises hope for more balance next season. Kamil Stoch from Poland celebrated three World Cup victories and is the new Polish prospect after the retirement of Adam Malysz. The Germans, too, have a new jumper who can win World Cups: Severin Freund won twice and was on the podium five times. He is consistent, down-to-earth and might have a successful career ahead of him. Finland has Ville Larinto, who unfortunately tore his ACL at the Four-Hills-Tournament. Yet he is still young and with his victory in Kuopio showed that he can keep up with the Austrians. Altogether six nations won World Cup competitions this season.
The 2010/11 season was the last one for some icons of Ski Jumping: With Janne Ahonen, Adam Malysz, Michael Uhrmann, Primoz Peterka and Andreas Küttel world champions, Olympic champions, Four-Hills-Tournament and overall World Cup winners ended their careers. These five athletes achieved a total of 250 podium results and almost 100 World Cup victories. They will leave a void, no question.
