Time to start Cross-Country World Cup season

Time to start Cross-Country World Cup season

The 2011/12 season for the FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann is just about to start after mild weather conditions gave the Organizing Committee and the Norwegian Ski Association multiple sleepless nights. Thanks to ten new snow cannons, Sjusjøen - located at an altitude of 850 meters - was able to take over the Opening initially scheduled at Beitostoelen. Sjusjøen (literally "Seven lakes") is located some 20 kilometers north-east of Lillehammer. Just a few days to go, snow production is still in full swing on site but everything is on schedule to welcome the teams later this week. For the weekend, the forecast calls for temperatures just below freezing. For Sjusjøen it will be the World Cup premiere in Cross-Country Skiing on quite demanding tracks.

For the racers, the early snow training was characterized by a Europe-wide hunt for snow, let alone for first competition experiences. Already the national Norwegian opening originally scheduled in Beitostoelen on 12-13 November had to be cancelled due to lack of snow. Some of the Norwegian athletes thus travelled to Bruksvallarna (SWE) to test their pre-World Cup shape in the season opening there last weekend.

The organizers of Bruksvallarna staged the national event but they too had to adapt the competition program to one race on Saturday and Sunday. The host of the 2010 FIS Cross-Country World Cup opener in Gällivare was forced to cancel FIS and Junior races at the same time. Snow situation over the border in Finland has not been much better. The traditional FIS races in Rovaniemi on 19-20th November had to be cancelled due to lack of snow. Yet, in spite of warm November there were venues in Finland, which could prepare a track and even carry out competitions. The national season opener was staged in Vuokatti a while back, whilst Muonio prepared a track from stored snow from last season and organized three FIS competitions last weekend. Inari, too, hosted two sprint competitions last weekend.
