Nordic Combined enters new territory
This week's competitions in the DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup in Almaty (KAZ) mark another historical moment for the discipline with the first ever event at this level. Despite the costs as well as logistical issues, almost all nations are travelling to the ninth largest country in the world.
Austria's Nordic Combined team paid for 800 kg overweight for their trip to Almaty and Team Italy is only present in Kazakhstan because extra budget was provided by the National Ski Association - and this because of the recent historic victories by Alessandro Pittin.
Only the USA and Finland will miss the stop in Almaty, but 13 other nations will be there with an estimated total of some 50 athletes. Two individual Gundersen competitions (one jump/10 km cross-country) will be carried out - in the middle of the day local time, early morning Central European Time (time difference: GMT +6 hours).
The spotlight is once again on overall World Cup leader Jason Lamy Chappuis (FRA), though even more on his main chasers Pittin, last weekend's first time winner Watabe (JPN) and Mikko Kokslien (NOR). Although several competitions remain until the final in Oslo, the competitors cannot afford to lose ground on Chappuis. But who knows? It could be that we'll see another first-time World Cup winner at this new venue in this interesting and unpredictable season?
