Alpine Skiing: In favor of super combined
For Alpine Skiing, the meetings during the FIS Congress 2012 in Korea focused on finalizing the calendars (ladies, men) for the 2012/2013 World Cup season which included only minor amendments. The super combined in the World Cup schedule includes two competitions per gender from the upcoming season onwards. However, no crystal globe will be awarded.
New helmet specifications from season 2013/14 until end of season 2017/18 were approved based on the proposal of Ski Racing Suppliers (SRS) whilst on proposal of the Working Group for Alpine Technical Equipment, a new statistics system to follow the actual injury status process will be implemented.
Regarding rule changes, after many years of discussion, stepping back will only be allowed in slalom. Furthermore, specifications to the injury status and the maximum number of allowed starts while maintaining this status were made as was a clarification for the starting position for athletes who were ranked in the top 15 of event World Cup Starting List at the time of injury.
For racing suits, a precision was made to ensure that “competition suits and clothing worn underneath, such as undergarments, etc., must have a textile surface on the inside and the outside. The surfaces may not be plasticised or treated by any chemical means (gaseous, liquid or solid) and must have a minimum permeability of 30 litres per m2/sec.”
Also, as approved already in 2010, the age change in the youth categories - the shifting of the 1st year eligibility from 15 to 16 years of age and move to the use of U(nder)-16/U(nder)-14 categories comes into effect in season 2012/13. The primary objective of this change is to provide the developing athletes with more time to focus on skills development. Matching the age change has also seen modifications in the vertical drops, direction changes, distance and ratios of gates for children and juniors.
