Sölden opens the Audi FIS Ski World Cup season 2011/12
The Audi FIS Ski World Cup season 2011/12 is about to get underway with the traditional Opening this coming weekend. The ladies’ and men’s giant slalom competitions on Sölden’s Rettenbach glacier will offer the Alpine ski racers the first chance to measure their new season’s form after some six months of hard training, off and on snow. It is the 15th time that such an early season event is set for the Austrian high altitude resort.
Last year, poor visibility and fog forced the cancellation of the men’s race after the first run while the ladies race was won by Viktoria Rebensburg who went on to claim the season’s giant slalom World Cup globe.
This year the conditions look excellent. Markus Mayr, the FIS Race Director in charge of the ladies' technical events, gave the green light for the event last Thursday.
"The course is in probably the best condition it has ever been at this time of the year. We are very pleased with the preparation work by the Organizers," said Mayr. "It’s looking excellent for the season opening giant slalom competitions ."
The Sölden weekend will also see a very full program arranged by the many stakeholders of the ski circus, including various pre-season press conferences and other season kick-off gatherings, such as the FIS Forum Alpinum 2011 press conference which is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 13 CET in the Festsaal at Sölden Freizeitarena.
FIS President Gian Franco Kasper and the defending FIS overall World Cup champions Maria Höfl-Riesch (GER) and Ivica Kostelic (CRO) will meet the international ski media and answer questions under the moderation of Eurosport commentator Nick Fellows. The Forum will be followed by an open meeting to provide the latest update on the FIS Injury Surveillance System (FIS ISS) and the new alpine equipment specifications with the participation of the research experts from the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center and the University of Salzburg along with the FIS professionals.
