EBU and OeSV in exclusive negotiations

The EBU and the Austrian Ski Association (OeSV) are reported to have entered into an exclusive negotiating period for the international TV rights of the FIS World Cup events in Austria beginning with the coming season 2011/12.

The EBU, the consortium of public service broadcasters, also won the rights in the previous cycle, 2008-09 to 2010-11. The OeSV appears to have been won over by the EBU's strong guarantees of free-to-air coverage and the option of having its rights looked after by a rights-holder with few other skiing rights. One of the main competitors, Infront Sports & Media has media rights distribution deals with around 17 National Ski Associations.

The Austrian TV rights include some of the ski season's most prestigious competitions. Around 80 per cent of the value of the Austrian rights is wrapped up in four events: the Alpine Skiing races at Kitzbühel and Schladming, and the Ski Jumping events at Innsbruck and Bischofshofen, which are part of the Four-Hills Tournament. The duration of the new deal has not been finalized but the EBU is understood to be seeking a deal of three years, with an option to extend. The EBU will sub-license the rights outside Europe to agencies.
