2018 Games to PyeongChang Voting in Durban, the International Olympic Committee has awarded PyeongChang, South Korea the right to host the Olympic Winter Games in 2018. PyeongChang won in the first round of bidding in a secret ballot, edging out Annecy and Munich. It was the third straight time PyeongChang has bid for the Games after it suffered close defeats for the 2010 (losing to Vancouver) and 2014 Games (losing to Sochi). The South Korean city collected a total of 63 votes out of the 95 cast, easily ahead of Munich with 25 and Annecy seven. "The 2018 Games in PyeongChang embrace the opportunity to spread winter sports into a rapidly developing part of the world with great potential for participation and generating new enthusiasts," said FIS President Gian Franco Kasper. "Through the first Olympic Winter Games in Korea, FIS is looking forward to working with PyeongChang to further grow snow sports in Korea. We are especially excited about increasing the activity in the FIS disciplines to the young generations in all of Asia." The last time a city won in the first round when there were more than two cities bidding was 1995 in Budapest when Salt Lake City won its bid to host the 2002 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. |
