Roccaraso ready to host the FIS Alpine Juniors
In just 20 days, the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2012 will take place in Roccaraso, in the province of L'Aquila and Abruzzo region of central Italy. From February 29th to March 9th, Abruzzo will welcome approximately 500 athletes and officials representing more than 60 different nations. With competitions in all the FIS Alpine World Cup events (downhill, super g, giant slalom, slalom and parallel team event), the winners of the individual races gain not only a gold medal, but also a ticket to the World Cup finals in Schladming.
Thanks to recent heavy snowfalls, the three competition locations, all of them close to each other, are ready: The Direttissima in Monte Pratello (Rivisondoli) for downhill and super-G races, the Lupo in Aremogna for giant slalom and the Gran Pista in Pizzalto for slalom and the team event. Everything will be coordinated by Valerio Ghirardi, well known as the long-time coach of the Italian ladies downhill team, personal coach of Isolde Kostner and afterwards coach of the Spanish ladies.
The talented athletes competing in the Junior Worlds are generally chosen to represent their national teams based on their performances in FIS races and Continental Cups. With inspiring, young athletes born between 1992 and 1996, several new names from the World Cup Circuit will travel to Roccaraso. One athlete to especially watch out is Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), the 16-year-old talent who already gained a podium position in this year's World Cup.
