Snowboard Junior Worlds in Sierra Nevada
The FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships are currently underway in Sierra Nevada, Spain and will continue until 31st March. This event is an important step for the country's candidacy for the FIS Snowboard & Freestyle World Ski Championships 2017 and shows the commitment of the Spanish Royal Winter Sports Federation and Sierra Nevada to the youth. Geographically, Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Spain with the ability to see the Mediterranean Sea and Rif Mountains of Morocco while standing on the resort's peak. Not only known for its beauty and culture, Sierra Nevada is no stranger to major FIS events as it hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996. Since 2005 they have become a fixture in the Snowboard and Freestyle ski worlds through hosting numerous events. Next year, the FIS Snowboard & Freestyle Ski World Cup Finals are set to be held in Sierra Nevada.
With the close proximity of the University of Grenada, Sierra Nevada is the perfect place to draw large crowds with interest in the sport and indeed one-third of the resort's clients are snowboarders. Almost 500 riders from all over the world are presently in Sierra Nevada and these Championships are the first event in Sulayr Snowpark's latest facility: the new halfpipe on Loma de Dilar. A freestyle and snowboard pipe more than 150 meters in length and six metres in height that is adapted to the FIS standards for major competitions gives the possibility of making three jumps on each side.
It's already been an exciting year for the young athletes some of whom were involved with the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games, and now end the season battling it out amongst the world's best juniors. Yesterday, Arielle Gold (USA) and Tim-Kevin Ravnjak (SLO) secured gold in the halfpipe. Gold, a 15-year-old talent from Steamboat Springs, relegated French riders Emma Bernard and Lucile Lefevre to second and third spots respectively. On the men's side, 15-year-old Ravnjak clinched the boys' title ahead of Dimi de Jong (NED) and Nikita Avtaneev (RUS).
All in all, medals will be awarded in five different events. With the snowboardcross and halfpipe events already claimed, Wednesday and Thursday will see a parallel giant slalom as well as a parallel slalom (28th) before the Junior Worlds conclude with a slopestyle event on Saturday (31st).
