Final specifications for Alpine racing equipment Following additional consultation with expert bodies, the FIS Alpine Executive Board has now confirmed the final new specifications for alpine ski racing equipment to be valid from the 2012/2013 season onwards. The additional review was mandated by the FIS Council following proposals for modifications from the ski industry. The complete table of specifications is available here. The new equipment specifications are valid for the World Cup, World Championships, European Cup and the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships competitions during the 2012/2013 season. Racers in all other Continental Cups and FIS races are allowed to use skis made according to both new and old specifications during the 2012/2013 season. Thereafter from the 2013/2014 season only the new specifications will be valid in all levels of Alpine ski. Substantial research conducted by the FIS project team in cooperation with the ski industry as part of the FIS Injury Surveillance System has been carried out in order to define the new specifications. The project has been led by the University of Salzburg together with the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center and other institutions from Lausanne and Davos. The FIS research has shown that the new specifications will help reduce the risk of injury and improve racer safety. They focus on the injury risk presented by ski equipment (combination of ski, binding, boot and standing height) in downhill, super-G and giant slalom. Further research projects are underway on the other two of the three main injury risk factors identified, i.e. course setting/speed and snow conditions. |
