Outstanding Ski Flying Champs in Vikersund
On Sunday, 26th February, the 22nd FIS Ski Flying World Championships came to an end. Besides the 16 participating nations, more than 65 000 spectators on-site and 400 accredited media, millions of TV viewers in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, and Switzerland, together with the Pan-European audience on Eurosport, were watching the Championships. FIS Vice-President Sverre Seeberg concluded his speech at the closing ceremony with the following: "It's been an outstanding Championship," and thanked the Local Organizing Committee for its significant efforts during the last few months of preparations.
The two first rounds of the individual competition were scheduled for Friday. In beautiful afternoon sun, but with challenging wind conditions, the jury was forced to cancel with only five athletes left in the first round. Even so, more than 10 000 spectators saw amazing jumps, with the longest jump of the day by the Norwegian Rune Velta at 234 meters.
On Saturday, the wind conditions were significantly better and the sold-out crowd of more than 27 000 spectators witnessed outstanding sports performances. The competition was decided in two competition rounds, with Norwegian Rune Velta leading in front of Martin Koch (AUT) and Robert Kranjec (SLO) after the first round. A total of three Norwegians were in the top 10 before the second round including, to the joy of the home crowd, local newcomer Anders Fannemel who posted the longest jump with 244.5 meters. Then in the second round Martin Koch had an unlucky fall after an impressive flight of 243 meters, but was awarded with high points and won the bronze medal. The last athlete out off the start gate, Rune Velta, had to beat Robert Kranjec's length of 244 meters. The young Norwegian flew 234.5 meters and was awarded with a silver medal, three points behind the talented Slovene who celebrated his first individual gold medal. With five different nations in the top six, the medals ceremony in Vikersund City became a great celebration of the victorious athletes.
On the final day of the Championships in Vikersund, a team competition was held in lower temperatures with some wind, and an almost sold-out stadium could enjoy another amazing day in the sun. As expected, the Austrians led from the first round ahead of Germany, Slovenia and Norway. Team Austrian went on to defend their triumph from Planica 2010, whilst the longest jump of the day was by Norwegian Rune Velta with 243 meters.
The interest in the Championships was higher than ever. With exceptional TV production by the host broadcaster NRK, TV viewers around the world saw amazing TV images from the tiny town in Norway. The Local Organizing Committee had its own media team including 12 volunteers working with social media, vikersund.no and local TV production. And with success: www.Vikersund.no had over 100 000 unique visitors throughout the Championships week!
For future Organizers of FIS Championships and World Cups, the Organizing Committee offered a study group program. and over 100 persons participated, including Val di Fiemme 2013, Voss 2013, Harrachov 2014, Falun 2015 and several World Cup Organizers. The next FIS Ski Flying World Championship will be held in Harrachov in 2014.
