Freestyle Skiing Continental & World Cups get going

Freestyle Skiing Continental & World Cups get going

With a total of five Continental Cup and two World Cups events on the schedule within the coming weeks, some exciting Freestyle Skiing action is about to get underway. These are the first competitions in the Olympic Qualification process for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games and will feature the top athletes.

FIS Freestyle Skiing Coordinator Joseph Fitzgerald states: “The FIS Continental Cups in Freestyle Skiing provides younger athletes and the top teams with high-level competition and FIS points. These competitions are a stepping stone to the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup, the FIS World Ski Championships and Olympic Winter Games. To qualify for the Olympic Winter Games, skiers will need FIS World Cup points, which are awarded to the top 30 skiers, in order to qualify and earn quota spots for the 2014 Games. The qualification period will run from the start of season 2012/2013 until 19th January 2014.“

To prepare for the season, many of the teams have been training in the Southern Hemisphere. New Zealand has always been noted for great halfpipe and slopestyle facilities. Some slopestyle skiers are already on site to train in South America for the World Cup in Ushuaia (ARG).

Down Under, the Freestyle Skiing Australian New-Zealand Continental Cup (ANC) will open tomorrow, 16th August in Perisher (AUS) with moguls competitions for men and ladies. The Freestyle Skiing season will continue on 18th August in Mt Hotham (AUS) staging ski cross events and finish in Cardrona (NZL) on 19th August with halfpipe events for both genders.

On the South American continent, La Parva (CHI) and Ushuaia (ARG) are on schedule for 19th and 31st August, staging ski cross and slopestyle competitions.

The FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup events will be held in Cardrona (NZL) for ski halfpipe on 23rd August and in Ushuaia (ARG) for ski slopestyle on 7th September.
