Alpine Skiing: Beaver Creek and Lake Louise
After the Speed Opening at Lake Louise, the men’s Audi FIS Ski World Cup moved on to the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships venue in the US Rockies, Beaver Creek and its famous Birds of Prey course. As the only men’s World Cup stop in the United States, the Birds of Prey has evolved into one of the world’s premier courses featuring three days of action including downhill, super-G and giant slalom.
To kick things off, the three-time World Champs medallist from GAP 2011, Italy’s Christof Innerhofer, who struggled most of last season, won the downhill followed by the Norwegian duo Aksel Lund Svindal and Kjetil Jansrud.
In the super-G, Italy’s Matteo Marsaglia was a surprise winner, scoring his first World Cup podium. Aksel Lund Svindal once again followed in second with Austria’s Hannes Reichelt rounding out the podium in third. Thanks to his two first and two second places during the North American Tour, Svindal returns to Europe as the overall leader on the men’s side.
On Sunday, Ted Ligety validated his huge opening win in Soelden five weeks ago in front of a roaring US crowd. Austria’s Marcel Hirscher was the closest in second place but altogether “Ted the Shred” has now won the opening two giant slalom races of the season by a massive combined 4.51 second margin.
American Ladies sweep Lake Louise
In the first speed races of the season that were somewhat hampered by changing weather, Lindsey Vonn scored her second hat trick at Lake Louise, aptly now renamed to ‘Lake Lindsey’. What’s more, Vonn was always joined on the podium by a teammate in the second position. In both of the downhills, Stacey Cook claimed second marking her first two career podiums. In the super-G, it was Julia Mancuso’s turn to underline the US ladies’ team strength in the speed events.
After the Canadian weekend, Lindsey Vonn has reached 56 career wins which puts her in second spot on the all-time victory list behind Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell who has 62. She also became only the fourth lady to score 100 podiums.
At the Lake Louise World Cup, Chemmy Alcott from the United Kingdom battled back mentally and physically from a high-speed crash on the same slope two years ago to compete in her first race. Despite suffering injuries that almost ended her career prematurely, Alcott even scored World Cup points by finishing 25th in the first downhill.
Next stages St. Moritz (SUI) and Val d’Isère (FRA)
The ladies now head to St. Moritz, Switzerland for a super-G, super combined and giant slalom from 7th-9th December.
On the men’s side, action continues in Val d’Isère (FRA) with a giant slalom and slalom race.
