Falun 2015 ready to move forward

Falun 2015 ready to move forward

The 2nd Coordination Group meeting for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun (SWE) took place at the conclusion of a successful FIS World Cup Final weekend at the Lugnet stadium which saw 27'000 spectators cheering on the world's best Cross-Country skiers. The Falun 2015 team led by Sven van Holst was joined by representatives of the City of Falun, the Swedish Ski Association, FIS and Tridem Sports, the sales agency for the TV and marketing rights holder European Broadcasting Union. For the first time, the newly-appointed project team from the host broadcaster SVT also attended the meeting giving an insight into their early planning.

While various projects to develop the recreational center in Lugnet are being planned, the meeting clearly highlighted the urgency of decision-making by the City of Falun to upgrade the competition facilities, especially the jumping hills, and to launch major infrastructure development projects in the arena, as well as the accommodation facilities. Time is of essence since major test events are scheduled to take place in Falun already from the 2012/2013 season onwards.

The Falun 2015 team presented impressive results from a community-based project known as Beyond Skiing 2015 Foundation. The project is designed to provide the framework for the local and regional stakeholders to join forces behind the championships and to work together to develop the region for and beyond the 2015 event.
