Stoch ends Morgenstern’s winning streak
It took a total of six FIS Grand Prix competitions and variable winds to stop the winning streak of Thomas Morgenstern at the highest level summer ski jumping series. In Einsiedeln (SUI) on Sunday, Kamil Stoch (POL) finally put a stop to the five victory run that Morgenstern began with the Poland Tour, followed by wins in Hinterzarten (GER) and Courchevel (FRA). The Pole won the nerve-racking competition in Einsiedeln by defying the challenging conditions and showing a fantastic jump of 118 meters which earned him 137.0 points. The second round had to be cancelled due to the changing winds, including a strong, gusty tailwind at the hill.
"I'm very happy about my victory today, especially because I worked so hard and fought for it since the beginning of the summer. I knew already in the morning that it would be a difficult competition because of the wind. The only thing you can do is to focus, and that's what I did today", said Stoch.
Thomas Morgenstern also performed a strong jump, but with his 112.5 meters he received only 133.5 points, having to concede the top spot on the podium to Stoch. "Of course it's never perfect when a competition is decided after only one round. But when a round takes two hours it's probably a good decision to cancel. It was a challenge to stay focused for such a long time and that's why I'm happy about my second place." Norwegian Rune Vela finished third after having jumped under relatively stable conditions, he posted the first podium result of his career in a FIS Grand Prix competition.
Jumping on his home hill, the crowd favorite Simon Ammann finished sixth in his first appearance this summer and the Swiss, who still has a training deficit due to some back problems, was satisfied with this result.
After six competitions in this year's FIS Grand Prix, and with five more to go, Thomas Morgenstern has a clear lead in the overall ranking with 580 points. Kamil Stoch is second with 389 points. After a busy summer schedule Morgenstern, along with the rest of the Austrian team and some other athletes, plan to skip the next Grand Prix events in Japan.
