Excellent conditions await Juniors in Roccaraso

Excellent conditions await Juniors in Roccaraso

Thursday, 1st March, will see the 32nd edition of the FIS Alpine Junior World Championships start in Roccaraso, Italy. This will be the 6th time for Italy to host the Alpine Junior Worlds, and the Organizers are thrilled to stage the event. In the course of nine days, athletes from all around the world will compete in downhill, giant slalom, slalom, super -G, a combined and a parallel nations' team competition.

Located relatively far south in Italy, the Organizing Committee is looking forward to welcoming the athletes and officials to Roccaraso and promote the region in a good way with its stunning view over the southern peaks. . The weather forecast is predicting sunshine and fairly warm temperatures, and everything is set for the participating nations to enjoy their stay in Italy.

FIS Race Directors Marcus Waldner and Janez Fleré have been working with the Organizing Committee to ensure the best possible racing conditions. Today the first downhill training run took place, and Marcus Waldner could state that the conditions are "tip top". The courses are set and well prepared, and with all the teams arriving yesterday, today was the first day both for the Organizer and the teams.

The Opening Ceremony was held last night as planned but the warm temperatures have forced a slight change of the schedule. Instead of starting the title competitions with the ladies' giant slalom, the first medal competition is the ladies' slalom with the first run starting at 8 CET.

Last year, the Swiss team won an impressive 11 medals at their home Junior Worlds in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. This year, Swiss-Ski is sending 16 talented athletes to fight for the medals. Other strong teams are predicted to be the Canadians that are sending 12 athletes, of whom three already had their World Cup debuts earlier this season. Also the Italians and Austrian should be counted in the fight for medals, as are the Americans.
