Snowboard: Refinements in race formats

Snowboard: Refinements in race formats

In Snowboard, the World Cup calendars, race formats and qualification criteria saw slight modifications during the Congress week. Overall, the discipline is well on its way to achieve its strategy of limiting the number of events with a focus on high quality and less quantity in the calendars from next season.

For the Snowboard parallel events, an overall World Cup ranking has been re-established and athletes can win the overall crystal globe. For the final runs, modifications were introduced in order to shorten the length of competitions and thereby provide higher attractiveness to the audience.

For snowboard cross, the team event will become an integral element of the World Championships in 2017 and team competitions will become officially implemented in future Junior FIS World Championships. In addition, snowboard cross will implement a “cut down” system allowing 50 per cent of the final bracket to directly qualify for the final round after the qualification run.

With regards to the Sochi Olympic Winter Games in 2014, the dual parallel slalom will introduce new features such as rollers and kickers. In the Olympic snowboard cross finals, heats of six riders will start as opposed to four in the last Games.
