Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix
When the second half of the Summer Grand Prix begins on the upcoming weekend, fans of Nordic Combined will have an opportunity to see a mix of traditional and new venues as well as competition formats in action.
After the first stop in Sochi (RUS) on 21st-22nd July, the next competitions will be held in Oberwiesenthal (GER), Val di Fiemme (ITA) and Oberstdorf (GER).
Oberwiesenthal is a traditional venue for Nordic Combined, hosting World Cup competitions since 1983/84 and now organising the Summer Grand Prix for the third time from 25th to 26th August.
The competition in Val di Fiemme (ITA) on 29th August will serve as another test event for the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships 2013 after the full renovation of the Predazzo hills and facilities. As in Oberwiesenthal, a city course for the roller skiing portion will provide a spectacular backdrop for the chase after points and podiums.
The "Finale Grande" will be held in Oberstdorf (GER) from 31th August to 1st September with two individual Gundersen competitions. The summer final on Saturday 1st September will consist of two rounds of ski jumping and 15 kilometers of roller skiing with only the best 30 athletes of the summer competing.
FIS Nordic Combined Race Director Uli Wehling views the Summer Grand Prix as a great opportunity: "This year, the rule changes in our sport aren't so big that we need to specifically test them. Only the Penalty Race will be amended in regard to the Ski Jumping part, but in the end this is just a change of the mathematical equation used in the graphics display for TV. But as a chance to test their form and also to get acquainted with new rules and regulations, the Summer Grand Prix series is a valuable opportunity for the teams and athletes. It is also a chance to be there for our fans and to make the sport of Nordic Combined even more popular."
