Schladming Finals see an exhilarating finish and tearful goodbyes
The Audi FIS Ski World Cup finals went off without a glitch last week in Schladming, the host of the greatly anticipated FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2013. After questionable weather hanging over the course at the beginning of the week, the luck turned and gave five beautiful sunny days in the Steiermark region. Athletically, the week was full of surprises as the men's and ladies' athletes fought for the renowned globes. As Lindsey Vonn strove to break the 2000 World Cup point record set by legend Hermann Maier in 2000, Marcel Hirscher and Beat Feuz battled it out for the men's overall.
In the end, the large globe of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup 2012 went to Lindsey Vonn on the ladies side with a remarkable 12 wins, 17 podium finishes and 1980 World Cup points this season, beating the ladies World Cup point record previously held by Janica Kostelic but shy of claiming the record points tally from Maier. On the men's side, hometown favorite Marcel Hirscher took the title with nine season victories and 14 podium finishes. As for the small globes, it all came down to the wire on the men's side. The downhill globe went to Austrian Klaus Kroll, the super-G to Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal, whilst overall winner Marcel Hirscher also won the giant slalom globe. The biggest surprise was saved until the very last day with the slalom trophy going to Swede Andre Myhrer who despite tough conditions put down two solid slalom runs beating the house high favorites Ivica Kostelic and Hirscher, neither of whom recorded any points.
On the ladies side, Vonn dominated downhill with a remarkable 690 points and grabbed the super-G globe as well to prove her overall strength this season. Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg defended her giant slalom globe while Marlies Schild, after an astonishing six wins this season, proudly claimed another slalom globe for her collection.
The week was full of emotion as some of Alpine Skiing's greatest stars bid their farewells to the World Cup circuit. Just like their careers, Anja Pärson and Didier Cuche made their last hurrah memorable ones. After coming through the finish line on her last career run in 8th place in the super-G, Paerson alongside her teammates did her signature belly slide on the snow. The following day, Cuche, always entertaining the crowd, made an extra special race for his final GS run, the final one of his career. Dressed up in retro woollen ski clothes, leather boots and wooden skis, he hugged and high-fived his way down the course bringing the crowd to tears. Both stars will never be forgotten for not only the amazing athletes they are but also for the everlasting influence they have had on Alpine ski racing.
