Season Review Alpine Skiing Ladies with Atle Skaardal
Atle Skaardal, the Chief Race Director for the ladies' Alpine Skiing, took a moment to reflect on the 2011/12 Audi FIS Ski World Cup season on the ladies' tour.
Looking back...
Atle Skaardal: From a sports perspective the ladies' overall winners in most events may have been decided early on, but we saw some very exciting races. The mixture of classic and new Organizers gave the season its special flair.
From the perspective of the weather, it was a challenging season due to the very wintry conditions all around. Luckily we managed to reschedule all but two events (Munich and Val d'Isère super combined). The loss of the Munich City Event was very unfortunate because it was a great event in 2011 with excellent atmosphere. We then ended the season on a positive note with the fantastic Finals in Schladming, which also served as a very important test event for the World Championships next year.
For me, a very positive development this season was that our continuous work in several areas to enhance safety is now bearing fruit. We have been very consequent in managing the speed especially in downhill but also in super-G and giant slalom. The new gate panels are also contributing to improved safety as are our efforts to ensure consistency of course conditions through top level course preparation. Finally, the new helmet specifications too helped increase the awareness of the need for protecting the head.
On future focus areas...
Atle Skaardal: This season presented a true travelling challenge. Besides Sochi, we went to Moscow, Bansko, Andorra and Scandinavia. For me this again raises the question of calendar planning and the importance of making the schedule acceptable and manageable for the racers. We have to be very careful not to overload the calendar and over-expose the racers.
Another focus area for us on the ladies' side continues to be overall promotion and attracting fans and spectators. In addition to the sports part, which typically lasts 1.5 - 2 hours, our events need to offer a full program of entertainment and action. Compared with the men's tour, the ladies' Organizers are under even more pressure as offering a full event program requires a bigger budget which remains a challenge.
