All set for Vikersund 2012
Thursday 23rd February will see the 22nd FIS Ski Flying World Championships start with qualification rounds at 18:00 CET, followed by the official opening ceremony at 20:00 CET. With the weather forecast predicting 5 plus degrees and sunshine, an all time high number of tickets sold, including a full house for Saturday's finals of the individual competition, and more than 1300 volunteers ready to welcome teams and spectators, everything is set for a spectacular Championships extravaganza in Vikersund (NOR).
FIS Race Director Walter Hofer completed the official inspectionon Wednesday and was impressed with the construction and infrastructure on the hill. The athletes, spectators and media will have the best possible atmosphere in the newly-built hill facilities, with several hospitality services. "In addition to the sports performances, I believe the atmosphere at the stadium and around the cultural program will be exceptional," Hofer said.
Around 400 accredited media will be present to cover the 22nd FIS Ski Flying Championships. With a number of strong nations challenging for medals, it promises to be a highly exciting competition both for the individual competition where two rounds are carried out both on Friday and Saturday and for the team competition on Sunday. A total of 17 nations are participating, each of who is allowed to have up to four athletes. Host broadcaster NRK has a large team working in Vikersund, with 23 cameras ensuring the best possible TV images for broadcasting around the world.
An excited Organizing Committee is in the process of finalizing the preparations before the opening ceremony on Thursday night. With more than 1300 volunteers, the small town of Vikersund is ready and waiting to welcome the teams and spectators to take part in the highlight event of the year.
