FIS flag reached the summit of Mt Everest The FIS Flag has been flown on Mount Everest! As part of the team organized by the Nepal Ski Association, Chimmi Urken Gurung, Treasurer of the National Olympic Committee of Nepal and President of the Nepalese Cycling Association successfully reached the summit of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest (8848m over sea level) on 21st May 2011 when he flew the FIS flag above the Everest peak at 6 am local time. The FIS flag carrying program was initiated by the Nepal Ski Association on the occasion of the FIS 100 year celebrations at the Antalya Congress in 2010. The team departed from Kathmandu on 19th March and they were targeted to summit from 5th-25th May. This is really historical event for all winter sports family of the world and has made new history of FIS. Chimmi Urgen Gurung was a member of the Mount Everest Cleaning Expedition Team that climbed to Mt Everest from the north side. They collected approximately 150 kg of waste materials from the mountain, returning to Kathmandu recently. The flag that was displayed the top of the world will be handed over to FIS President Gian Franco Kasper by the President of Nepal Ski Associaton, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, at the 2012 FIS Congress. |
