Bjoergen, Cologna Cross-Country champions
The FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann finished with the so-called FIS World Cup Final, which consisted of four races; a sprint in Stockholm and three races in Falun (both SWE). In an exciting final Marit Bjoergen (NOR) and Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) delivered the final battle for the large globe and the Norwegian took the victory in the World Cup Final and also won the coveted crystal trophy for the best female skier in 2011/12. On the men's side, the winner of the World Cup trophy was already decided before the Final. Thanks to an outstanding season, Swiss Dario Cologna claimed his third victory in the overall ranking.
For Bjoergen, it was her third overall title after 2005 and 2006. The Norwegian is now third in the historical statistics together with Marjo Matikainen-Kallstroem and Justyna Kowalczyk behind Elena Vaelbe (five overall victories) and Bente Skari (four overall wins). Bjoergen has collected nine crystal globes in total including the small globes for sprint and distance. The Olympic champion missed only five individual races and earned points in each race where she was at the start. In the end she won by a 270 point margin over the 2011 champion and Tour de Ski winner 2012 Justyna Kowalczyk. Therese Johaug (NOR) debuted on the overall World Cup podium in third place. The distance globe went to Marit Bjoergen, too, while the sprint globe was won by Kikkan Randall, who became the first US skier to win a title.
On the men's side, Dario Cologna already won the overall World Cup in the seasons 2008/09 and 2010/11. Only Bjoern Daehli (NOR) and Gunde Svan (SWE) have been more successful by winning the large crystal globe 6 respectively 5 times. The 26-year-old Swiss claimed victory with an amazing margin of 750 points over Devon Kershaw from Canada. For Kershaw it is the first time among the top three in the overall World Cup and he also became the first Canadian male to claim a podium in the overall ranking. Petter Northug (NOR) took third after not participating in many races after the Tour de Ski due to focusing on the Vasaloppet and sickness. Cologna also secured the distance trophy while the successor of Sweden's sprint king Emil Joensson came from the same team with Teodor Peterson taking the sprint title for the first time in his career.
In the Nations' Cup, Norway took the honors 7075 points ahead of Russia. Sweden finished third, 9308 points behind the winning team. Last year, the Russians were already close to a historical coup on the men's side and this year they finally realized it. The team including Alexander Legkov, Maxim Vylegzhanin, Nikolay Morilov and Ilia Chernousov claimed victory in the men's Nations Cup 780 points ahead of Norway. On the ladies side, the trophy went to Norway. All in all, 13 different nations made it onto the Cross-Country podium this season and seven of them even to the top spot.
