Schladming 2013 kick-off in Iceland

Schladming 2013 kick-off in Iceland

With less than 300 days remaining until the start of the 2013 highlight event, the Austrian Ski Association organized a major PR event in Iceland to kick off the final countdown to the FIS Alpine World Championships 2013 in Schladming. The happening included a ski race with Austrian ski legends and current World Cup racers, media representatives, sponsors, partners, and young ski talents from Iceland. In total, 80 participants joined the "Funrace" also featuring a miniature Sky Gate - the landmark of the Schladming 2013 finish area. Five young ski talents from Iceland were delighted to win tickets for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships events next year.

A theme underlying the launch event in Iceland, the World Ski Championships in Schladming seek to be remembered for environmental awareness and sustainability. "Ski Festival with Heart - for Our Environment" is the slogan of the event that wishes to be a success in terms of environmental matters. The Organizers have a charter with five objectives which should serve as guidelines for the sustainability concept.

President of the Austrian Ski Association Peter Schröcksnadel explained his responsibility as Organizer as follows: "All in all, we would like the Championships to have a positive effect on the environment. This has also been the guiding principle in the planning of the infrastructure. Hardly any new slopes were built for the races; all new buildings will find use in the long term. So as to transport a maximum number of spectators with as little ecological impact as possible, special deals for travel by train and shuttle services will be provided. "

Former ski racer Fritz Strobl will serve as the Ambassador for the Environment for Schladming 2013. As the Olympic gold medalist from 2002 puts it: "It is a personal concern of mine that sport and nature should go hand in hand."
