Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix to begin

Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix to begin

Whilst the male ski jumpers are already in the middle of their FIS Grand Prix series, the Nordic Combined athletes are just about to start theirs. For Eric Frenzel, Jason Lamy Chappuis, Mario Stecher and others, the Summer Grand Prix series with five competitions at three different locations is about to start. Racing will get underway in Oberwiesenthal (GER) on 27th-28th August, followed by Liberec (CZE) on 31st August and Oberstdorf (GER) on 2nd-3rd September.

The action in Oberwiesenthal will start on Saturday, 27th August, with the provisional competition round (11:30 am). 77 athletes from 14 nations have entered, including most of the stars of the Nordic Combined scene. The next day the first pilot of the so-called ‘penalty race' will be staged. In the penalty race, only the length of the ski jump counts, not the style marks. The basis for the jumping ranking is dependent on the size of the hill (HS) which determines how many penalty laps the racers must complete during the cross-country competition. In Oberwiesenthal, the HS is 106 meters, which means that jumpers matching or exceeding this distance do not collect any penalty laps for the cross-country portion on roller skis. Jumps between 102.5-105.5 meters will be subject to one penalty lap, those between 102-99 meters two, and so forth. The maximum number of penalty laps will be eight. During the cross-country race, the athletes may choose themselves when to complete their penalty laps which is expected to add to the excitement and allow a role for personal tactics.

Eric Frenzel, Germany's Nordic Combined talent, commented: "I am glad about new ideas, not critical. The new format sounds interesting."
