3rd Ladies Seminar: Challenges of female participation

Retention in sport and challenges of the female health were discussed at length at the third edition of the Ladies Seminar that was staged on the opening day of the FIS Congress 2012 in Kangwonland. The seminar was entitled “Women and Health” and saw a total of five speakers reflect on the overall topic from various perspectives as well as a concluding round table.

The FIS Athletes’ Commission member and FIS Cross-Country World Cup sprint rankings winner Kikkan Randall addressed the issues of young girls and the challenge of keeping them in sport. She discussed the program “Fast and Female” that is trying to provide young females with positive role models and an opportunity to belong to a team to make sport fun.

Misuk Kim spoke about the long-term program that employs various measures to grow participation in winter sports in Korea. The plans to develop a next generation of athletes are spearheaded by a number of top ambassadors and operate under the motto of “Drive the Dream.”

Hans Spring and Tron Krosshaug discussed the specific challenges of injuries – back problems and ACL injuries – respectively among the female athletes, focusing on the importance of preventive exercises from young age. Larry Gaul summarized the unique issues related to the female health from an overall perspective.
The presenters were joined in the round table discussion by two former top athletes, Petra Majdic (SLO) and Anja Paerson (SWE) along with FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis who concluded the seminar.
