Way forward for Alpine City Event
A bit more than two weeks after the first Audi FIS Ski World Cup City Event in Munich, a detailed feedback process is underway in order to assemble the reactions and plan the way forward for the future of such events.
Viktoria Rebensburg, defending Olympic champion in giant slalom, who unfortunately did not make it beyond the first round, commented: "The atmosphere was unbelievable. More than 25'000 spectators - that was a really special feeling. I would have liked to keep racing longer. Too bad it did not work out."
Aksel Lund Svindal, who was eliminated in the second round, had a great time regardless: "I thought it was cool. Good job by the organizers and fun to see so many people showing up and making it fun for us to race. Being up against someone else man vs man is fun. Skiers aren't used to that. Makes a different vibe at the start!"
Christoph Netzel, Chief of Alpine at ARD, German public television broadcaster, noted: "It was a truly high class event. The great atmosphere at the Olympic Mountain was channeled right to the TV viewers at home. For us it was an experiment, too. Two hours of Alpine Skiing live on ARD is not commonplace; we are very happy with the approximately 3 million viewers which shows that this type of an event is well received and has future! Congratulations to FIS Chief Race Directors Günter Hujara and Atle Skaardal and the athletes who really took their chance to present themselves as real ski stars."
He added:"Man-to.man duels are dynamic, modern, refreshing and spectator-friendly. The Munich event showed that a parallel slalom awarding World Cup points is a City Event that looks spectacular on TV. We could imagine a mini series of such events in the future. But first let us look forward to the classics of the season and the World Championships."
Summarizing the current situation, FIS President Gian Franco Kasper stated: "We at FIS have been pleased with initial reactions to the first City Event that was carried out in Munich, including various positive comments from the teams, athletes, the media and most importantly, TV viewers and ski fans."
He continued: "Following initial internal discussions, a more detailed stakeholder analysis is currently underway. The gathering of the Alpine Executive Board in Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the upcoming World Championships will be a great opportunity for a review of the season so far, especially the City Event in Munich. We look forward to confirming a 2nd edition in Munich at the same time during the 2011/2012 season. Depending on the results of the in depth analysis, even a second City Event could be included in the calendar."
