A record number of 36 nations, four more than at Inawashiro 2009, have entered to compete in the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships 2011, which will see the first title event on Wednesday 2nd February 2011. Medals will be awarded in the ladies' and men's moguls in the opening competition. All in all, 313 athletes have been entered to compete, up from 258 two years ago.

The qualification for the ski slopestyle is on schedule even earlier, at 9:30 AM local time on 2nd Februaryfor its bebut at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships. Meanwhile, skiers will take to the halfpipe on Wednesday morning for their first training runs. The championship superpipe is one of the largest halfpipes in North America and was the site for an American sweep in half-pipe snowboarding at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Halfpipe has been on the FIS World Championship schedule since 2005 and is growing stronger internationally each year. Ski slopestyle and halfpipe are two of the five ski events that are up for consideration by the International Olympic Committee for potential inclusion in 2014 Games in Sochi (RUS).

Deer Valley Resort is no stranger to big competitions. The FIS Freestyle World Cup has visited the resort every year since 2000 and many athletes openly consider it their favorite stop on the FIS circuit. The resort also hosted the 2003 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships and when Deer Valley Resort was elected for 2011five years ago, it became the first resort in North America to host the Championships twice. At that time, there were 127 athletes from 23 nations participating.
