Ski Jumping finals traditionally in Planica
Every year the Bauhaus FIS Ski Jumping World Cup season final takes place on the huge hill in Planica. Ski Flying in Slovenia has always been something special with a tremendous following at the event and the Letalnica was long the world's largest hill. The largest hill of the world may now be in Vikersund, Norway, yet Planica has not lost any of its excitement, even now it's all about long flights in the springtime in the southern Alps. And it's still about victory in the Ski Flying World Cup.
There is also a lot to celebrate during the upcoming weekend: Adam Malysz will make the last World Cup jumps of his long career and the Pole will do his best to achieve his 40th victory in one of the two individual competitions. Thousands of Polish fans will be there to bid him a worthy farewell - with Adam Malysz a true legend will leave the ski jumping scene.
The popularity of Malysz is further demonstrated by the fact that his farewell party in Zakopane that will take place on the last weekend in March was sold out within two days. The organizers expect up to 80'000 fans there.
In Planica, the fans will also celebrate the Slovenian medalists from Oslo 2011. Because of a great jump by Robert Kranjec, the athletes led by head coach Matjaz Zupan won bronze in the team competition on the legendary Holmenkollen large hill. Kranjec is always one of the favorites in Planica and the bronze medal is likely to provide him extra motivation, as it was the first Ski Jumping medal for Slovenia at World Championships since 2005.
In the Ski Flying rankings, with Gregor Schlierenzauer (325 points), Martin Koch (301 points) and Thomas Morgenstern (262 points), three Austrians are leading although Simon Ammann (256 points) and Malysz (255 points) too have a realistic chance at winning this prestigious title.
In Planica, a reconstruction of the hill is planned and new records may be possible again after the reconstruction in 2014, according to Janez Gorisek, one of the planners of the hill, who spoke at a press conference in Klagenfurt. The Slovenians are careful with the reconstruction and put a high priority on safety of the hill.
