FIS World Cup series continue on schedule
This week has seen the third week of Audi FIS Ski World Cup racing in North America. Following the cancellation of the Big Weekend in Val d'Isere (FRA) due to lack of snow, Beaver Creek, host of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2015 stepped up to stage the rescheduled men's giant slalom and slalom races and the first ever ladies' World Cup event - a super-G - on its legendary course.
Meanwhile the home US team has embraced the opportunity to race on home snow, taking three of the four wins so far thanks to Bode Miller, Ted Ligety and Lindsey Vonn. Add another hat trick for Vonn in Lake "Lindsey" (Louise) in Canada last week and the victories of Sarah Hendrickson in the ladies' opening Ski Jumping World Cup event and Kikkan Randall in the Cross-Country Skiing sprint in Düsseldorf, and the early season's dominating force seems to be the US Ski Team.
As of next week, the Alpine World Cup circus will be returning to Europe. Helmut Schmalzl, FIS Race Director for the men's speed events, gave the go-ahead for both World Cup races (super-G and downhill) on the Saslong in Val Gardena/Gröden (ITA) scheduled for 16th-17th December 2011. Some more snow-making is still necessary to guarantee the races but thanks to favorable weather forecasts with freezing temperatures all this week, the races were confirmed.
The official snow control for the next ladies' Audi FIS Ski World Cup in Courchevel (FRA) on 17-18th December is set for Thursday, 8th December 2011.
