FIS President Kasper on World Snow Day
FIS President Gian Franco Kasper is looking forward to the inaugural World Snow Day on 22nd January 2012 and took the time to answer some questions from the World Snow Day team.
Are you going to do something special to celebrate World Snow Day?
This is a difficult question to answer as there are so many great events occurring. My dream would be to attend some of the events around the world and celebrate with the children participating, but I will be actually celebrating in a very special way on 22nd January 2012 since I have the great privilege to be attending the closing ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck. In addition to this I will also be attending some of the events throughout the Youth Olympic Games and visiting the young athletes of tomorrow.
What are your thoughts on World Snow Day and what is stands for?
When the concept of ‘Bring Children to the Snow' came to fruition, FIS never imagined the great potential that World Snow Day and FIS SnowKidz could have. The children of today are the caretakers of the world tomorrow and we hope that through this event and the dedication of the event Organisers we can show them and their families how much fun they can have in the snow while maintaining a healthy, safe and environmentally caring lifestyle. For me it is a great pleasure to see a child smile and when they are smiling in snow, it is that much more special.
What is your vision for World Snow Day?
I was asked this question a little while ago, but as I left the meeting I began to smile and hoped that World Snow Day would one day be as popular as Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day. But my vision for World Snow Day is also a little more serious. The event is a great time for everyone to enjoy the snow, invite someone new to enjoy the snow with them and look to a bright future of snow sports not just competitively, but also recreationally. World Snow Day is one day in the year and we hope that through an event such as this and many other initiatives people will be motivated to organize events and introduce new people to the snow throughout the year. As the International Ski Federation we have a commitment to giving people a chance to enjoy the snow and we will continue to do so for many years to come.
A final word?
As the big event draws closer I want to personally thank all the 225 Organizers for participating in the inaugural event. What they have achieved in the months leading to the World Snow Day has been overwhelming and I am sure the world is eagerly awaiting the results of these events. I hope the Organizers from this year will inspire the next group of Organizers for next year and so forth. I would also like to thank all the children and their families for participating in the events around the world. I hope you enjoy the snow on World Snow Day and for many years to come!
