FIS Tour de Ski 2011 at a glance
The 5th edition of the Viessmann FIS Tour de Ski performance by Craft Sportswear is now history. 10 event days, 8 days of competition. From minus 15 degrees to plus 5 degrees. 20 participating nations and 152 athletes.
The Tour de Ski 2010/2011 will be remembered as a highly exciting event. Although there were two "seemingly unbeatable" winners, Dario Cologna and Justyna Kowalcyzk, who made it hard for the others to fight for victory after setting the foundation for their victories early on, several amazing athletic performances were seen. In the 16 competitions that were held during 8 days, a total of 11 different ladies were on the podium compared with 12 men. The youngest athlete on the podium was Krista Lahteenmäki (21, FIN) and the oldest one, Arianna Follis (34, ITA).
The final Stages in Val di Fiemme delivered two of the most spectacular performances. On the last days, Therese Johaug (NOR) clearly showed that she wanted to be amongst the top Tour finishers. Thanks to the bonus seconds she won in the second-to-last Stage, she started with bib number 5 for the Final Climb on Sunday. Opening aggressively, she soon overtook Petra Majdic, Arianna Follis and Marianna Longa. Not looking back once, Johaug almost sprinted up the Final Climb, to celebrate her very first Tour de Ski podium in 2nd place behind dominating Kowalczyk.
On the men's side, Lukas Bauer, the winner of last year's Tour de Ski, also seemed determined to be back on the podium this year. Starting with bib number 10, the Czech overtook seven athletes in less than 25 minutes. While most athletes seemed to struggle once the final steep started, Bauer began his fight for real and managed to stay in front of all seven he passed on the way up to Alpe Cermis. In the end, Bauer had to acknowledge defeat only to Dario Cologna and Petter Northug (NOR). A spectacular performance which was celebrated twice on the podium: Once for his third position in the overall Tour de Ski standing, and once for the fastest time up the hill.
Tour de Ski has grown to become a highly interesting sports event also judging by the television viewing figures. On the last day in Val di Fiemme, a total of 15 live TV stations were present. In Norway, the country where Cross-Country Skiing came to existence, over 1 million persons (Norway has a population of 4.7 million) watched the last Stage which translated into a market share of 75% of all persons watching television on Sunday afternoon.
All in all, the fifth edition of Tour de Ski was a success and the focus now will be on continuing to grow the interest around it. As an example, a premiere for active ‘fans' took place two hours before the Final Climb started, where they could negotiate the course themselves. The ‘Rampa con i Campioni' turned out to be well appreciated opportunity for true fans, and had a total of 121 participants including several former champions.
The 5th Tour de Ski gave Cross-Country Skiing a real kick-start into the main part of the season, the interest around the sport has never been greater, and the count down to the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo has now officially started!
