First medals distributed at Erzurum 2012
Monday, 20th February was the first competition day in Erzurum at the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships featuring the free technique sprints for the juniors. Russia's Sergey Ustiugov was the quickest ahead of two Norwegians, Sindre Bjoernestad Skar and Sondre Turvoll Fossli. On the ladies' side, Stina Nilsson celebrated the first gold medal for Sweden as her compatriot Evelina Settlin stormed to silver. Swiss Christa Jäger made history with her bronze medal.
On Tuesday, 21st February it was the U23 athletes' turn with free technique sprints. Germany's Hanna Kolb and Gleb Retivykh of Russia proved to be the favorites and laid down the fastest qualification times after which they dominated all the way through to the finals where each claimed gold. Sweden's medal count increased again as Emma Wiken and Jennie Oeberg powered to silver and bronze medals. Evgeniy Belov of Russia followed his teammate and grabbed silver. Roman Furger was the surprise of the day when he stormed past Italy's Fabio Clementi in the finishing stretch and brought the Swiss their second bronze medal from the Championships.
On Wednesday, it was all about Russia in the first distance competitions. In Junior Ladies 5 km individual classic, Russian skiers swept the podium as Natalia Zhukova claimed the gold ahead of compatriots Elena Soboleva and Elena Serokhvostova.
Also in the junior men's 10 km classic the gold went to Russia. Sergey Ustiugov won his second gold medal at the Championships with a clear margin of +22.5 sec ahead of teammate Ermil Vokuev. Sinder Bjoernestad Skar was also fighting hard and took his second bronze medal at Erzurum.
On Thursday, the U23 World Championships continue with 10 km individual classic ladies and 15 km for the men. There will be no day off for the Cross-Country skiers as the Junior/U23 World Championships program is fully packed until Sunday. On Friday and Saturday, the skiathlons will take place and the Championships will conclude on Sunday with 4x3.3 km C/F Relay Junior Ladies and 4x5 km C/F Relay Junior Men.
The first set of medals was also distributed in Nordic Combined on Wednesday. Mattia Runggaldier brought the first medal of the Junior Championships in Erzurum for Italy. He ranked only 29th after the Ski Jumping part and started in the 10 km Gundersen competition with a 1 minute 28 sec gap on the winner of the Ski Jumping, Christian Artl of Germany. However, it was Artl's compatriot Manuel Faisst who led the German squad to a medal. Faisst eliminated the 00:36 sec gap at the start and took silver whilst teammate Michael Schuller grabbed the bronze medal.
Nordic Combined competitions resume again on Friday with the team event and will conclude on Saturday with the second individual competition.
After two days of training, the junior ladies and men ski jumpers will be fighting for medals on Thursday on the HS 108 hill. The ladies' competition starts at 13:00 LOC whilst the junior men will take over in the evening at 18:00 LOC.
