Angelo Vergani has turned 80

Angelo Vergani, the longest serving Secretary General of the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) turned 80 on 23rd June and FIS expresses its best wishes to a truly dedicated sports official. After a record of 62 years of service, Angelo Vergani retired from FISI two years ago.

Born in Lentate sul Seveso, in Brianza, Angelo Vergani’s career with FISI began in 1948 as a simple runner boy followed by official employment at the association after completion of his studies. In 1956, he volunteered for the Olympic Winter Games in Cortina and has stayed connected with the Games until Vancouver 2010, participating in 14 editions of Olympic Winter Games.

Vergani became the Secretary General of FISI in 1968 under President Fabio Conci and has seen the birth of the Ski Pool Italia, as well as the times of ski stars such as Gustavo Thoeni, Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni. He remained in that role until 1989 when he reached retirement age, but continued his collaboration with FISI until 2010, as an expert especially in international relations. As one of the leading figures of FISI, he was best known for good organization and efficiency of the office and federal structures.
