Niklas Dyrhaug prepares for Fiemme2013

Niklas Dyrhaug prepares for Fiemme2013

Niklas Dyrhaug is the rising star of Norwegian Cross-Country Skiing. The young skier from Tydal shone at last season’s FIS Tour de Ski, landing in 16th position as the second best Norwegian. He scored his first World Cup podium in the 4x10 km relay in Nove Mesto (CZE) and in the FIS World Cup Final, he stormed to his first individual podium just behind the unbeatable Dario Cologna (SUI) and Devon Kershaw (CAN). As part of its series “Summer Time for Winter Athletes”, the FIS Newsflash talked to Niklas Dyrhaug about his breakthrough season, plans for the coming winter, and much more.

FIS Newsflash: In your summer training, do you prefer roller skiing, running or mountain biking?

Niklas Dyrhaug: “In the summer, I like running with poles in the mountains. That’s my favorite workout in sunny, nice weather. In addition, I arrange a local competition in my home town, which is held on 18th August. The start lies at 762 m and the finish in 1762m, with a lot of good competitors and a very good atmosphere.”

FIS Newsflash: What is the best thing about summer training?

Niklas Dyrhaug: “I like warm weather and to train in the sun and take a swim afterwards.”

FIS Newsflash: If during training, some musician in your Ipod could come to life, who would it be?

Niklas Dyrhaug: “I actually listen to all kinds of music and do not have any favorites, so it depends on what kind of mood I am in. But I do like the Swedish band “Kent” very much.”

FIS Newsflash: If you could go for a swim anywhere in the world this summer, where would it be?

Niklas Dyrhaug: “I’m really bad at swimming (laughs). But maybe an island like Mauritius or something would be nice. Maybe next spring?”

FIS Newsflash: What is your goal for next season?

Niklas Dyrhaug: “I hope to take my first medal at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships next winter. That’s my main goal for the season. I will focus on skiathlon, the 50 km and of course the relay. It would be great to be in the relay team.
Overall, the three coming years with the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme (ITA), the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (RUS) and the FIS Nordic Worlds 2015 in Falun (SWE) feature as the biggest targets for me. As mentioned, I hope to take the first big step forward in Italy next year.”
