Skiers continue to help Japan through Tsubasa project Soon after the tragic North-eastern Japan earthquakes and tsunami in March 2011, Dr.Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), met with Tsunekazu Takeda, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), and offered the Olympic Family's support for recovery in the areas hit by the tragedy. Mr.Ser Miang Ng, IOC Vice President, was appointed to lead the project. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) also established a working group to support Japan headed by HRH Prince Faisel, IOC member from Saudi Arabia. Many top FIS athletes also joined forces to offer their support for Japan - a project was born that is known as "Skiers helping Japan" (skiershelpingjapan.com). During the Sport Accord Convention in London in April, another project was set up to bring various Olympians to visit the suffered areas to meet with the residents and to invite youth from the suffered areas to international sport events such as the Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck 2012. The current project is known as Tsubasa and it operates under the motto of "Where there is sports, there is a smile." Various former and current top ski racers continue to engage to support the rebuilding of Japan and the coming season will see various events taking place to allow children and their families enjoy the winter in the affected region. For example the Ski Association of Japan is preparing an event on World Snow Day, 22nd January 2012, in Tokyo and plans to link the Tokyo event with Inawashiro, a town in Fukushima prefecture and one of the affected areas that hosted the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Championships in 2009, to create a connection between kids in Tokyo and in Fukushima. On 4th February, former Olympic skiers including Jurij Franko and Kjetil Andre Aamodt will visit Iwate and Miyagi prefectures to ski with local children and to encourage them to continue skiing. |
