FIS President Gian Franco Kasper on London 2012

FIS President Gian Franco Kasper on London 2012

FIS President Gian Franco Kasper attended the Olympic Summer Games London 2012 in his capacity as IOC Member. Upon his return from London, FIS Newsflash had a chance to interview him.

Looking back, how was London 2012 in your view?

“They were very good Games with extremely high level athletic performances, much luck with the weather and wonderful public interest. With each medal the host nation Great Britain seemed to become more and more enthusiastic. The venues were excellent, meeting all the latest technical requirements and the expected traffic chaos did not really happen.”

As a member of the IOC’s TV & Radio Commission, broadcasting is of special interest to you. What was special in London from this viewpoint?

“TV production in London was led by the Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS) as is typical at the Games, with the support of BBC and others. They did an excellent job and produced amazing images. The latest technological means were implemented and the directors had a wealth of options at their disposal at each venue. It was impressive!”

Did you experience any personal highlights at London 2012?

“The Games themselves were the highlight: the sport, the athletic performances and the drama which is part of those.”

After London 2010, it is time for Sochi 2014. What happens next?

“Of course the team of Sochi 2014 was well-represented in London, for meetings and to gain practical experience on secondment assignments. The focus will now turn to them as they continue the detailed planning and will soon move into the operational phase. After the summer competitions there, the coming winter will see many test events including FIS World Cups in all our Nordic disciplines, Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding. Those will serve as a great opportunity for review of their status of preparations and for control. The IOC Coordination Commission for Sochi 2014 will be on site next in mid-October.”
